The seagulls own the harbor in Essaouira.
There is no escaping their aggression,
except to surrender,
to leave the water’s edge for the relative safety of the medina.
I read somewhere
that Alfred Hitchcock got the idea for “The Birds”
in Essaouira.
I thought it was an urban myth,
a good story,
but lacking truth.
But then I stood along the harbor,
here in Essaouira,
where the birds are everywhere,
impatiently seeking
the moment when they will reclaim it for themselves.

We have been to Essaouria and loved the seagulls – they are much bigger that Aussie Seagulls. Your photos are fantastic and take me back there in an instant. Essaouria was one of our favourite places in Morocco. So different to the hussle and hassle of Marrakech. But I did love all of Morocco.
I think these are really well-fed seagullls – they seem super-sized. I loved Essaouira too, even with the seagulls.
I really enjoyed your photos and commentary. That one photo of the blue boats against the blue water is my favorite.
Thank you! There are lots more blue boats on other posts!
Love your writing, observations and especially the photos. This is a great post and a heads up for a visit to Essaouira.
Thanks, Leigh. Essaouira should be on everyone’s itinerary.
Beautiful shots of the sea gulls. There certainly look right at home! Thanks for linking ot Travel Photo Thursday.
