Road trip to an Italian city in the sky

Last updated on March 29th, 2024

We are on a road trip to the city of Civita di Bagnoregio, an ancient hill town (it was once an important Etruscan city) that nearly floats above the eroded valley below, tethered to the earth by a thin bridge.

While this town today is mostly a vacation destination (Rick Steves is a fan), it is far from overrun with tourists when we arrive. It feels like an empty set waiting for life to happen.

Most buildings are still closed this early in the day, but an open church provides a cool refuge from the morning sun.

Later the sounds of Enya drift through the streets. . . part of the city has been taken over by a film crew, adding to the unreality of this place.

It’s wonderful here.
