Ohe’o Gulch (The Seven Sacred Pools), Hawaii

Last updated on June 14th, 2021

It is a gorgeous morning as we head further down the highway toward the south end of Maui.

We know we can’t follow the road all along the south of the island and up to our hotel on the other side (the road is closed and has been for a couple years now), but I want to see a little more of this area.

And what a beautiful area it is! Once we get past the road construction blocking our way, we discover the most beautiful part of the entire drive!

Perhaps the most gorgeous area of all is the ‘Ohe’o Gulch – dubbed “the Seven Sacred Pools” by an early promoter. (Although the number of pools completely depends on what you count as a “pool” and none were considered sacred by the ancient Hawaiians.) From the bridge I can see the string of pools dropping down the mountainside to the sea. . .

. . . but it is only when I walk down closer to the ocean that I realize how beautiful this place really is. Incredibly, unbelievably, otherworldly beautiful. Pictures can’t begin to do it justice.
