A scenic drive in Central Minnesota

Last updated on March 3rd, 2024

I asked my mother to recommend a scenic route between Sauk Centre and the Twin Cities that would let me avoid the freeway for awhile. She said there wasn’t one unless I really liked looking at corn and soybeans.

We decided to try anyway, following County Roads 17 and 25 from Sauk Centre, through Gilman, and down to Becker before jumping back on the highway.

My mom is partly right – there are a lot of corn and soybean fields along the way – but there are also small lakes, wetlands (one would think cattails are a valued crop, there are so many of them), wood lots, cows, charming little towns, patches of native prairie, and old barns.

(I’m especially partial to the prairie flowers and barns.)
