Lighthouse birds on Kauai, Hawaii

Last updated on April 24th, 2024

I don’t know what I was expecting to find at Kilauea Lighthouse, but it wasn’t a bird sanctuary.

Birds, however, really are the highlight here.

At this time of year the area surrounding the lighthouse is home to nene, frigate birds, albatross, and red footed boobies. It is a treat to see again some of my old friends from the Galapagos, but here only the nene allow up-close and personal encounters.

Although the birds are the main attraction, whales are make their appearance just off-shore. Frigate birds and albatross swoop by while we watch for the tell-tale signs of the whales, but mostly we just enjoy the sun and sea.
