South African Travels 2011: Johannesburg’s Protea Hotel Wanderers
We are staying in Illovo, a suburb of Johannesburg. Apparently there is high-end shopping and fine dining available in the nearby suburbs, but there is no place to walk to from the modern, well-appointed Protea Wanderers Hotel. Luckily, the complex itself is interesting.
For starters, the parking lot is filled with wisteria – which is in full-bloom at the moment.
This is a big lawn bowling center and a manicured green lies between the wisteria-filled parking lot and the bowling club.
The hotel is modern and interesting inside,
but I’m particularly fascinated by the open stairway in the lobby and find myself stopping to photograph it every time I enter or leave the building.
It isn’t a bad place to be kind of stuck.
