Hanapepe, Kauai, Hawaii

Last updated on December 15th, 2020

We make a quick stop at Jo Jo’s for yummy shave ice and then wander down the street in pursuit of an original Red Dirt shirt (one bucket of Kauai’s infamous red mud is enough to dye 500 tee shirts, or so they say), before stopping in at Salt Pond Park to check out the beach.

Then it is time for a little shopping in the artsy enclave of Hanapepe, where we have a pleasant chat with wood turner Robert Bader and I buy a lovely marbleized silk scarf by Becky Wold. (We wish we could have brought one of Mr. Bader’s bowls home, but, alas, the price for his exquisite work is too high for our already stretched wallet.)There are a number of lovely galleries here and we have a pleasant visit in this quirky little spot.

We also discover what might be my dad’s dream house – an “artist designed” house featuring a yard full of rusted machinery posing as art.

It could all be ours, if only we had an extra $800,000 and a desire to retreat from the world. Maybe someday.
