Until very recently, the river itself served as the main highway through Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. While an increasing number of roads penetrate the region, for most of the people who live and work along the delta’s rivers, the water is still the most frequently used highway system.
But not everyone lives and works on the water. For those without their own boat or simply in need of transport to work or school, ferries are still a key piece of the Mekong Delta transportation network. During our brief time on the river, we regularly saw ferry landings along the river bank and ferry boats on the water. Here is a sample of what we saw.
