While we anchored out in the bay and visited via a dinghy, Madeline Island’s aptly named Big Bay State Park is accessible to anyone for the cost of the ferry trip from the mainland.
The bay feels huge sitting in the middle of it, the 1 ½ miles of wrap-around beach seemingly going on forever. But on shore, it feels more intimate – the wide beach with its fine sand and tumbled rock is contained by sea grass, woodlands, and wetlands.
In a few steps it is possible to move from intense sunshine to the dappled shade. While white tailed deer might leap across the path, it’s much easier to photograph the moss, ferns, and flowers that line the way!
