It’s your last chance to take in the 2016 Minnesota State Fair

Tomorrow is Labor Day, and that means it is the final day of the 2016 Minnesota State Fair. . . . So there is still time to take in all the fair’s fun and food.

Here is a sampling of what I found at the fair this year:

There are people who come to the fair only for the food. That’s not surprising, since the options are overwhelming, if sometimes a bit odd.

While I couldn’t bring myself to try the deep-fried pickles (my friends said they were pretty good), I went back to RC BBQ more than once to indulge in Burnt Butt Ends. (The best fair food isn’t always deep-fried or on a stick . . . although these would work well on a stick.)

Furry critters

The fair began as an agricultural festival, and agriculture is still a significant component. It’s a chance for farmers (and farm kids) to show-off their best animals and produce.

This year, for the first time, I spent my barn time watching dairy goat judging with my cousins (who were showing their goats).

It’s kind of like a dog show, only for livestock.

Crop art

Apparently most state fairs have eliminated crop art (artwork created using seeds, grains, and other plant matter), but it’s still a popular state fair mainstay in Minnesota!

Perhaps not surprisingly, the Horticulture building is one of my favorite spots at the fair. The competitions change throughout the week, so you can return every few days to see it all – dahlias, bonsai, orchids, and more.

You can also find these living kaleidoscopes there.

I so want one of these!

Fast rides

Of course, it wouldn’t be a fair without a midway, and what’s a midway without rides . . . although I’m not much for actually riding on them. I just love to photograph them!

There’s a lot more too, so you really should check it out for yourself!
