The largest ground squirrel in North America, marmots are found throughout the northwestern mountains of the US, through western Canada, and into Alaska. Glacier and the Canadian parks are home to hoary marmots. Lucky (and observant) visitors can see them in various locations around the park, but the Alpine meadows behind the Logan Pass Visitor’s Center are a good place to look for them. That’s where we saw these guys.

(Those kids were so busy performing for their parents that they never realized they weren’t the focus of the other cameras aimed their way!)

As an alternative, you can just leave your camera out where the marmots can get to it themselves, as in this video clip from Greenpeace.

  1. We saw quite a few of these gorgeous creatures on the Icefields Parkway. We saw them in the snow and on rocks and took quite a few photos of them. We don’t have them in Australia.

    1. They are lovely, aren’t they? We only saw a couple on the snow and didn’t get good shots of them 🙁 There are so many unique creatures in Australia! I’d love to get down there to see them.

Your turn!
