Palm Springs is surrounded by mountains, thus there are stunning canyons all around the city. On this beautiful morning we are visiting the Tahquitz Canyon, where the two-mile trail that begins behind the visitor’s center loops up one side of the creek and back down the other.
It’s hard to believe that, not so many years ago, this canyon was home to vagrants and drunken parties that all too often resulted in the local authorities fishing bodies out of the river. It would have been easy to strengthen the fences and just keep the public out. I’m grateful that the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians instead put in the hard work of cleaning up the canyon and then took the risk of sharing this treasure with the rest of the world. It’s a magical place.
