Playa Limpia, Tulum, Mexico

Technically the idyllic beaches of the Mexican Yucatán are open to the public, but private ownership of the land surrounding the beaches limits access and the private beach chairs and palapa umbrellas every resort places on “their” beach makes them even less public. While visitors have the option of paying to spend the day at a beach club, the workers who support the tourist industry have a limited number of options.

In Tulum local residents have found a place to call their own at Playa Limpia, a strip of fine white sand and exposed rock along an empty stretch of the hotel zone.

It’s a more interesting beach than a perfect swath of sand and, because it was located directly in front of our villa, it was sort of my beach too, if only for a few days.
